Exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy in 1927, Sunlight on Snow was painted down the road from the artist’s home in Bucks County. A leading figure in the New Hope Circle of Pennsylvania Impressionists, Harry Leith-Ross was noted for working from nature in all sorts of weather.
The artist applies a heavy impasto with vigorous brushwork to impart a spontaneous richness and masculine energy to the painting’s surface, combining a freshness of observation with a bracing sense of atmosphere in this bright, sparkling scene.
